Stability and Balance
According to the Center of Disease Control, falls are the leading cause of injury death in adults over the age of 65 and one in three individuals in this age group falls annually. Along with fractures, lacerations, dislocations, and brain injuries, fear of suffering another fall can be just as debilitating. Suffering a fall can instill a constant fear of falling again, decreasing the chance of you or a loved one continuing activities of daily living, increasing dependency on others to perform these tasks. Situations like this normally begin a downward spiral. For example, if you suffer a fall, need surgery, stop or avoid doing things like drive, vacuum, wash dishes, cook/bake, make the bed so on, it decreases the amount of physical activity you engage in and increases your dependency on friends or family members to do these daily tasks for you. Fortunately, falls in individuals of this age group are largely preventable. Incorporating an exercise program consisting of weight bearing exercises for muscles of the legs, hips, and core will improve strength of these regions and improve both balance and coordination. Each exercise session with us at Physical Fitness gives us added peace of mind that our clients’ chance of suffering a fall due to lack of balance is significantly lower than someone who is not exercising or exercising in an unmonitored large fitness facility.
